Gothic Lovers City Chelmno

Chełmno (German: Kulm, Culm) is a town in northern Poland near the Vistula river with 20,000 inhabitants and the historical capital of Chełmno Land. Situated in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship.

Chelmno , founded in 1233 as the first city and cradle of the Teutonic Knights, is a small city along the Vistula River in between Grudziadz and Bydgoszcz.

The town grew prosperous as a member of the mercantile Hanseatic League. The city survived World War II almost unharmed. Many of the historic buildings in the Old Town are therefore still original from the end of the Middle Ages.

Gothic Parish Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (XIII - XIV century). For hundreds of years a parish church in Chełmno (Culm) has been home to an incredible relic – small bits of skull belonging to St Valentine, the patron saint of love. That is why Chelmno is called Lovers City.

The city center of Chelmno is concentrated around the large market square, with in its middle the Renaissance Town Hall.

The market square is surrounded by a number of fine burgher houses. There is a relatively large number of churches in Chelmno, with the Church of the Assumption and the Church of St James both dating from the early 14th century.

The defensive walls that protected the town from intrudors is largely in tact, with 23 towers and the fortified Grudziadz Gate as main entrance.

Ludwik Rydygier (1850 – 1920) was a Polish famous surgeon. He was learning in gymnasium in Chelmno (Kulm), which he graduated in 1869.
